Rebels Upset No. 72 Denver to Win Own Tourney

Feb. 13, 2005

LAS VEGAS - UNLV rallied to claim the doubles point and then used that momentum to defeat 72nd-ranked Denver 4-0 and win the UNLV Men's Tennis Spring Invitational at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Sunday.

The Rebels, who took their own tournament's title for the first time since 2002, won their sixth consecutive match to improve to 6-2 while the Pioneers fell to 6-2.

DU led on all three doubles courts to begin the morning but UNLV's No. 3 duo of Jonathan Hooper and Martin Redelinghuys came back to defeat Steve Flaks (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Jason Tan, 8-5. Adam Holmstrom (Eskilstuna, Sweden) and Niklas Persson (Stockholm, Sweden) lost at No. 1 to Henner Nehles and Aviram Salomon on a tiebreaker to clinch the doubles point.

In singles play, Nehles, ranked 38th, defeated Holmstrom at the top position, 6-2, 6-3. Jonathan Hooper on No. 5 and David Campbell at No. 6, both freshmen, also won in straight sets to secure the team victory as the remaining three single matches were halted.

"I thought the guys played hard the entire weekend," head coach Geoff Young said. "We felt the effects of a long day of tennis yesterday and couldn't beat a tough outdoor team on its home courts."

Denver returns to action on Friday, Feb. 25 at BYU.
