DENVER - University of Denver senior Scott Davidson (Guilford, Conn.) of the men's lacrosse team was selected as one of 37 men's lacrosse players in the U.S. for the 2005 Tewaaraton Award watchlist announced today by the Tewaaraton Award Foundation.
The Tewaaraton Trophy is recognized as the pre-eminent lacrosse award honoring the top female and male varsity collegiate lacrosse player in the United States. It is the lacrosse equivalent of the Heisman Trophy.
The players on the watchlist are considered early season indicators of who to watch as the 2005 lacrosse season begins. This list will be voted upon by coaches and narrowed as the season progresses, ultimately reaching a final list of five men and five women who constitute the award's finalists.
Davidson, a 2005 preseason All-America Second Team selection, earned STX/USILA All-America Honorable Mention honors and was named to the All-Great Western Lacrosse League First Team in 2004. He was also No. 8 in the nation in face-off win percentage (.617), No. 18 in ground balls per game (4.93), and second on the team in points (27).
The Pioneers finished third in the GWLL (3-2, 8-6 overall) in 2004 and welcome back welcome back eight starters and two all-GWLL selections, Davdison and senior Matt Brown (Burnaby, B.C.). Seniors Davidson, Brown, Christian Anderson (Madison, Conn.) and Brian Sanders (Columbus, Ohio), and juniors Darren Sasaki-Scanlon (Norwalk, Conn.), Adam Miller (Columbus, Ohio), Bart Sullivan (Dublin, Ohio) and Greg Weigel (Port Republic, Md.) all return the lineup for the Pioneers.
Denver will open the season on the road at North Carolina on Saturday, February 26, and at Virginia on Monday, February 28, before returning home to host the fifth annual Pioneer Face-off Classic.
