March 16, 2005

LAS VEGAS - The University of Denver women's golf team shot a final-round 25-over par 313 Wednesday and finished in 13th place at the UNLV Spring Invitational held at Black Mountain Golf and Country Club. The Pioneers shot a 54-hole total of 961 and finished 66 strokes behind tournament winner Southern California. USC shot a 31-over par total of 895 for a 15 stroke win over second place Pepperdine.

The Pioneers were without the services of one of their top golfers in senior Kate Waggoner (Denver, Colo.), who missed the tournament with an injury. Denver shot its best round of the tournament in the final round, improving by three strokes over Tuesday's second round.

Sophomore Emily Hoeper (Kansas City, Mo.) once again led the way for the Pioneers in a tournament, shooting a final-round 5-over par 77 Wednesday and finishing in a tie for 22nd place. Hoeper shot a 54-hole total of 232 (16-over par) and finished 12 strokes behind medalist Cassandra Kirkland of Arizona, who shot a 4-over par 220 for a one stroke victory over Eileen Vargas of Pepperdine. Hoeper has now led the Pioneers in each of Denver's seven tournaments in 2004-05.

Next for Denver was senior Tessa Gillam (Englewood, Colo.), who shot a final round 79 Wednesday and finished with a 54-hole score of 241 and in a tie for 42nd place. Junior Kari Broshko (Calgary, Alberta) was third for the Pioneers after she closed the tournament with a final round 82 and finished with a 54-hole score of 244 and tied for 57th.

Senior Jennie Peek (Denver, Colo.) finished tied for 80th with a 54-hole score of 251 and freshman Charly Hoehn (Vail, Colo.) rounded out Denver's scoring in 86th place at 252.

The Pioneers are next in action on Saturday, March 26 when they play in the Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz.
