DENVER - Adam Holmstrom (Eskilstuna, Sweden), ranked 89th in the nation, returned to the singles lineup and won at No. 1 singles, and Viktor Zetterholm (Stockholm, Sweden) added an upset win at No. 3 singles, but it was not enough as the University of Denver men's tennis team fell to No. 37 San Diego State this afternoon at Stapleton Tennis Pavilion. The Aztecs improve to 14-5, while the Pioneers fall to 7-11.
"It was good to play a tough opponent a week before the SBC tournament," said head coach Geoff Young. "San Diego State is a good team and both Adam and Viktor got good wins against strong opponents."
In singles action, Holmstrom started right where he left off and defeated San Diego State's No. 64 Benedikt Stronk, 7-6, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Zetterholm tallied the other singles win at No. 3 singles and defeated No. 82 Armando Carrascosa in a three set thriller, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0. Those would be the only two singles victories the Pioneers would record as Niklas Persson (Stockholm, Sweden), Jason Tan (Amsterdam, Netherlands), Steve Flaks (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Kalle Rosen (Helsingborg, Sweden) were all defeated at their respective singles matches.
Persson and Holmstrom defeated Stronk and Carrascosa, 8-5 at No. 1 doubles, but the duos of Zetterholm and Rosen and Tan and Flaks were defeated at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles as the Aztecs clinched the doubles point to seal the victory.
The Pioneers return to action this weekend in Santa Barbara, Calif., to battle UC Riverside on Saturday, April 16 at 2 p.m. MT and No. 75 UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, April 17 at 11 a.m. MT.
