DU sophomore books NCAA ticket as ITA Mountain Regional singles finalist on Saturday
PROVO, Utah – University of Denver men's tennis player Dylan Davies has earned an automatic berth to the 2026 NCAA Men's Tennis Division I National Championships in singles after advancing to the ITA Mountain Regional Championship singles final on Saturday afternoon.
Davies defeated Idaho State's Sep De Visser, 7-6(4) 6-3, in Saturday's semifinals. With the win, he earned one of two automatic singles berths to the NCAA tournament as one of the ITA Mountain Regional singles finalists.
He becomes the sixth Denver men's player to qualify for the NCAA singles tournament and the first since 2024 when DU claimed both ITA Mountain Regional singles berths when Daniel Sancho Arbizu and Raffaello Papajcik each advanced to the final.
The first five Pioneers to become NCAA singles qualifiers advanced to the national tournament a combined eight times. In 2024, Papajcik made history as the first Denver men's player to win an NCAA singles match with a victory in a three-set battle in the first round.
During Saturday's regional semifinal win, Davies extended his streak of sets won to 12, which dates back to his first collegiate tournament at the Bedford Cup in the Mountains in September. During the 2026 ITA Mountain Regional Championships, Davies did not lose a set.
The Denver sophomore is in the very early stages of his NCAA career. He sat out his first official season after joining the squad midway through the 2026 dual campaign before finally making his collegiate debut three weeks ago at the Bedford Cup.
This week's regional tournament was only the second of his NCAA career so far, and he booked his trip to the NCAA National Championships in what was just his ninth collegiate singles match played. In his 18 singles sets played so far, he has won all but two.
The singles final itself was not played with the ITA and all teams agreeing in advance to play only through the singles semifinals to determine the region's NCAA singles qualifiers. Had the title match been played, Davies would have matched up against the No. 4 ssed Xavier Calvelo from Utah State.
Davies will now await official announcement of the NCAA field in mid-November. The 2026 NCAA Men's Tennis Division I Singles Championship will be held November 17-22 in Athens, Georgia.
The University of Denver men's tennis team will resume its fall season when it hosts the annual Colorado Cup at Denver Tennis Park on October 30 – November 1.
