Denver- In the final match of the Denver Classic the Pioneers took TCU to a fifth game before falling to the TCU Frogs. 3-2. Leading the way for DU were senior Amanda Millard (Southlake, Texas), and sophomore Alyta Baris (Belvidere, Ill. ). The Pioneers placed third in the tournament behind TCU and Idaho State. Amanda Millard and Lisa Hunter were name to the All-Tournament team for their efforts. With the loss the Pioneers fall to 3-6 on the season.
The match was tightly contested from the start. In game one both the Frogs and the Pioneers came out intense. Outside hitters Amanda Millard (Southlake, Texas) and Holly Benson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) gave the Pioneers a great advantage. They combined for eight kills. On the defensive end Lisa Hunter (St. Louis, Mo.) kept the Pioneers in the match, before TCU pulled the game out.
Denver got back in the match in the second game, taking the game 30-20. The Pioneers continued to attack the Frogs on the offense with outside hitters Amanda Millard and Lisa Hunter, both recorded eight kills in the game. Hunter and Kristin Halt (St. Charles, Ill.) led the defense with a combined 16 digs.
The third game was a close match with both teams playing long points. Lisa Hunter led the Pioneer offense with 13 kills and also on the defensive end with 11 digs. TCU pulled the game out as they rallied for the last four points of the match.
"This is out third fifth game match and we've lost all of them," head coach Beth Kuwata said. "We need to learn how to win the tight matches" We push it to the fifth set and then we have some inconsistent play and we end up losing. We need to find a way to win."
In the first match of the day the Pioneers were defeated 3-0 by the Idaho State Bengals. Denver was lead offensively by Amanda Millard and Kerry Porter (Western Springs, Ill.), with 14 and 12 kills and defensively by Ashly Ball (Chual Vista, Calif.) who had 19 digs.
The Pioneers are next in action next weekend at the University of Denver Invitational, when they host Northern Illinois, Montana and Portland.
