DENVER- The University of Denver men's soccer team got back to its winning ways, putting two goals past UC-Davis for a, 2-1 victory over the Aggies this afternoon at Pioneer Field. Denver improves to 3-2-1 on the season, while UC-Davis suffers its first loss of the season and falls to 3-1-2.
"This was a quality win for our program" Head Coach Chad Ashton said. "We were able to make some things work for us on the offensive end and we had some positive results. Hopefully we'll build on the two great matches that we had this weekend as we move forward with the rest of the season."
The match was physical from the start, keeping most of the play in the midfield. The Pioneers and Aggies battled evenly for the better part of the first half before the Pioneers found the back of the net in the 44th minute on a Thomas Flynn (Broomfield, Colo.) goal. Flynn received a pass through the midfield from senior Zack Kobilca (Aurora, Colo.) and buried the shot behind UC-Davis goalkeeper, Charles Warne to give Denver the 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
After the break the Pioneers came out with the same intensity and just one minute into the half, found the back of the net again on a goal from senior forward, Scott Davidson (Guilford, Conn.). Junior Jacob Chase (Golden, Colo.) was credited with the assist, as the Pioneers gained the 2-0 advantage.
The Aggies continued to battle and in the 75th minute of the match were able to sneak one past Denver goalkeeper, Matt Bredehoft (Ft. Collins, Colo.), to cut the Pioneer lead to, 2-1. The Aggies were poised to strike again in the final minutes but Bredehoft came out of the box to make a save, to preserve the 2-1 victory for the Pioneers.
Denver returns to the field Friday Sept. 30 when they head to Nashville, Tenn., for a match with the Vanderbilt Commodores. The Pioneers return to Pioneer Filed on Friday Oct. 7 when they begin Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action by hosting UNLV in a 3 p.m. match.
