DENVER- The University of Denver men's soccer team defeated Florida Atlantic, 5-0 in its home opener at Pioneer Field. The Pioneers scored all their goals in the second half with goals coming from Jacob Chase (Golden, Colo.), Travis Hendricks (Englewood, Colo.), Thomas Flynn (Broomfield, Colo.), Ben Mendozza (Aurora, Colo.) and Mike McClain (Denver, Colo.). With the win the Pioneers improve to 1-1-1 on the season and goalkeeper, Matt Bredehoft (Fort Collins, Colo.) records his first shutout of the season.
The first half was dominated by quick ball movement from the defense and lots of passing. Denver put six shots on goal in the first half but couldn't get the ball past Owl goalkeeper, Anders Granstad. Despite putting more than half of their shots on goal and keeping the ball away from goalkeeper Matt Bredehoft, the Pioneers and Owls went into halftime tied, 0-0.
Denver showcased its offense prowess in the second half. Junior Jacob Chase started the scoring in the 55th minute. After receiving a crossing pass from Mendozza, Chase put the ball in the back of the net to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. After the Chase's goal, Denver put 10 more shots on goal, scoring on four of those opportunities. In 90 minutes of play Bredehoft, recorded one save.
"It was good to get the first win of the season," Head Coach Chad Ashton said. "We were able to do some good things in the midfield and defense, which lead to several quality scoring opportunities, that we capitalized on. Now we have to prepare for Wisconsin-Green Bay."
The Pioneers are next in action on Sunday Sept,, 11 when they host University of Wisconsin- Green Bay. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m. at Pioneer Field
