SAN JOSE, Calif. - Junior defender Josh Fallin (Midland, Texas) scored the lone goal of the game in the University of Denver men's soccer 1-0 victory over MPSF rival San Jose State Thursday in San Jose, Calif. The win is Denver's fourth consecutive as it improves to 8-3-1 (4-0-0) and San Jose falls to 5-6-1 (2-2-0).
The Pioneers started strong outshooting the Spartans 7-4 in the first half. Despite their efforts, Denver nor San Jose State could get one in the net and the game was scoreless at halftime.
Both teams came out of the locker rooms ready to play and the shot battle was even in the second half, with the Spartans edging out DU 4-3. The Pioneers capitalized on a scoring opportunity in the 70th minute when Fallin fought off defenders to head in a long throw-in from freshman forward Kellan Christensen (Layton, Utah). The goal went unanswered and junior goalkeeper Matt Bredehoft (Fort Collins, Colo.) earned the win, his fifth shutout and sixth win of the season.
"San Jose State is always a very difficult environment to play in," Head Coach Chad Ashton said. "We're always glad when we can come and get a win here."
The Pioneers face another MPSF rival Sunday Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. when they play Sacramento State in Sacramento, Calif.
