DENVER - Senior Lisa Hunter (St. Louis, Mo.) recorded four kills in the fifth game, including the final two of the game, as the DU Volleyball team posted a 3-2 win over Sun Belt Conference opponent Louisiana-Monroe, 32-30, 20-30, 30-23, 22-30 and 15-13 Monday evening at Hamilton Gym. DU improves to 12-9 overall and 5-4 in the SBC, while ULM falls to 5-20 and 2-7.
"Hunter took her best swings of the season in that final game," head coach Beth Kuwata said. "Her stepping up at the end was imperative to us winning this match."
The Pioneers got out to an early lead 4-0 lead in game five, but the Warhawks quickly rallied and took a 7-5 lead. Hunter tied up the game at 8-8 with a kill down the line. With the game tied at 13-13, Hunter recorded the final two kills of the match for the Pioneer win on assists from sophomore Clare Maxwell (Western Springs, Ill.).
Hunter had 18 total kills in the match and 10 digs for her 14th double-double of the season. Sophomore Holly Benson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) posted her fifth straight double-double with a 17 kill, 15 dig evening. Freshman Emmy Davidsmeyer (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was the only other Pioneer in double-digits kills with 13. Davidsmeyer also was part of two blocks and recorded a team-high three service aces.
"I'm just really proud of how Emmy played," said Kuwata of her middle blocker.
The Pioneers came out flat in game one, allowing the Warhawks to score 13 points off of DU errors, while Davidsmeyer hit .500 in the 32-30 win. Denver had six kills in the second game of the match, hitting -.103 in the 20-30 loss. DU came out in the third game and blocked four ULM shots to win 30-23. In game four, the Warhawks got out to an early lead and cruised, as DU hit just .171 in the 22-30 loss.
Maxwell recorded a team-high 48 assists in the match and junior Alyssa Hampton (Parkville, Mo.) had a match-high 21 digs.
The Pioneers return to action Friday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. in Hamilton Gym to face SBC opponent South Alabama.
