DENVER - Led by freshman Emmy Davidsmeyer (Colorado Springs, Colo.), the University of Denver volleyball team won their sixth consecutive match with a 3-0 sweep of Sun Belt Conference opponent UALR Friday evening at Hamilton Gym, 30-18, 30-25 and 30-27. Davidsmeyer contributed 12 kills and had an attack percentage of .526. DU improved to 16-9 overall and 9-4 in the SBC, while UALR fell to 12-18 and 5-8. DU is tied for first in the SBC West with North Texas.
Davidsmeyer also added five aces, two assists, three digs and was part of two blocks on the night. "Everything has just started to click," said Davidsmeyer. "Our passing is great and Clare (Maxwell) is getting me the ball, allowing me to make the plays."
Senior Lisa Hunter (St. Louis, Mo.) recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore Clare Maxwell (Western Springs, Ill.) had a match-high 45 assists, while junior Alyssa Hampton (Parkville, Mo.) posted a match-high 14 digs.
The Pioneers got out to a 12-3 lead as they cruised in the first game of the match, led by Hunter's six kills and seven digs. DU went on a 6-2 run to close the game out, 30-18.
Denver trailed early in the second game, then responded with a 9-2 run to retake the lead and went on to win the game, 30-25. Davidsmeyer posted three of her aces in the game, as the Pioneers once again finished on a 6-2 run.
Closing the match was a stiff task for the Pioneers, as UALR recorded their best hitting percentage of the match, .267, in game three. However, DU won the game, 30-27, led by Davidsmeyer's five kills to sweep the Trojans.
"This evening the goal was to serve aggressively, not necessarily so many aces, but aggressively," head coach Beth Kuwata said. "We kept them out of system with our aggressive serving and helped our defense. Beyond our serving, I was proud of the fact we applied consistent pressure throughout the match. We kept coming at them and didn't quit."
Denver closes out their 2006 home season Sunday, Oct. 29 at noon, against Arkansas State at Hamilton Gym. DU dropped a five-set match to the Indians in September.
