Denver Drops Close Match-up to Boise State

Box Score Denver had three players in double-digits, led by senior Tyesha Lowery (Arlington, Texas) with 19 but the University of Denver women's basketball team fell 70-65 at Taco Bell Arena in Boise, Idaho, Tuesday evening. Junior Alisha Godette (Colorado Springs, Colo.) recorded her second straight game with eight rebounds and junior Sara Benham (Muleshoe, Texas) had two blocks in the game. Denver falls to 3-3, while BSU improves to 4-4.

Denver sent the Broncos to the line 27 times with the Broncos converting 19 times. DU's two trips were the lowest total since Denver had eight on Dec. 7, 2005 against Colorado State. Boise State had a nine point lead midway through the second half, up 61-52 on the Pioneers. Denver was outrebounded 40-27 and allowed 19 second chance points.

"Two stats were the story of the game tonight, both of them defensive," head coach Pam Tanner said. "Boise State was 19 of 27 from the free throw line and they had 19 second chance points. Those two items were the difference in the game. We have to regroup for Portland now."

Denver trailed early in the first half, 8-2, but senior Lauren Reini (Portland, Ore.) hit a lay-up under the basket, before junior Brooke Meyer (Denver) hit a three from the corner to bring the Pioneers within one. Sophomore Nnenna Akotaobi (Thornton, Colo.) hit a jumper from the top of the key to give Denver back the lead.

Denver kept the pressure on and led by as many as seven points late in the first half. Freshman Brianna Culberson (Jefferson City, Mo.) led Denver with eight points in the half, while Benham accounted for five of Denver's first half rebounds. Denver forced nine BSU turnovers in the half and had four steals. DU took a 33-29 lead into the locker room at half.

DU wraps up its current road trip Thursday, Dec. 7 as they take on Portland in Portland, Ore., at 8 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on www.denverpioneers.com FREE!
