FT. WORTH, Texas - The No. 70 DU men's tennis team could not extend its winning streak to five matches, as they were shut out 4-0 on the road at No. 32 Texas Christian Friday evening.
"This was a good test for our team," said head coach Geoff Young. "TCU is the kind of team that come conference season, will be our competition, so hopefully we can take something from this experience and we be ready the next time we face a team of this caliber."
The Pioneers troubles began in doubles where DU was swept in all three positions. Adam Holmstrom (Eskilstuna, Sweden) and Niklas Persson (Stockholm, Sweden) fell 8-3 to Rafael Abreu and Jordan Freitas of Texas Christian at the No. 1 position. The No. 3 singles team of Steve Flaks (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Nejc Smole (Ljubljana, Slovenia) put up a fight, but fell short to Kriegler Brink and Jacopo Tezza 9-8 (10-8).
With Texas Christian capturing the doubles point, the Horned Frogs kept the momentum in singles winning at the No. 5, No. 3 and No. 2 positions to seal the shutout. Freitas beat Flaks 6-2, 6-2, Persson fell 6-1, 6-1 to Cosmin Cotet and Smole was ousted 6-1, 6-4 by Andrei Mlendea.
Due to the late start of the match, after TCU secured the win, contests at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6 singles were left unfinished.
The Pioneers return to action Feb. 26 in Dallas, Texas against SMU at Noon.
