Pioneers Fall 7-0 to No. 14 Miami

Coral Gables, Fla. - Nejc Smole (Ljubljana, Slovenia) and Steve Flaks (Colorado Springs, Colo.) teamed up at No. 2 doubles to records Denver's only win of the day as the Pioneers fell 7-0 to No. 14 Miami Wednesday afternoon in Coral Gables, Fla. The Pioneers battled 83 degree temperatures, as well as a talented Hurricane squad, but were unable to pull off the upset, falling to 10-5 on the season.
"It was very hot today and the guys were battling a tough team, as well as tough conditions," said head coach Geoff Young. "Miami is a very good team and we just came up short today."
The No. 71 doubles tandem of Adam Holmstrom (Eskilstuna, Sweden) and Niklas Persson (Stockholm, Sweden) were the first to fall by the score of 8-2 to Miami's No. 48 Luigi D'Agord and Daniel Vallverdu at the No. 1 position. Viktor Zetterholm (Nacka, Sweden) and Aljosa Nipic (Ljubljana, Slovenia) dropped their second match of the season to Eric Hechtman and Josh Cohen 8-5.
Smole and Flaks' 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles over Tim Krebs and P.J. Passalacqua sent the Pioneers into singles with a little momentum, but it did not last as Krebs battled back against Smole for a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles. Holmstrom, ranked No. 83 nationally, could not overcome seventh-ranked D'Agord, falling 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot. Vallverdu sealed the match for the Hurricanes at No. 2 singles, ousting Persson 6-1, 6-4.
In other results, Zetterholm fell 6-4, 6-2 to Hechtman and Miami's John Hoyes outlasted Flaks 4-6, 6-3, 10-7.
