DENVER - The University of Denver volleyball team dropped its home opener to Bowling Green in the nightcap of the Denver Invitational at Hamilton Gym tonight. The Pioneers dropped three straight games to the Falcons, 32-30, 33-31 and 30-18. DU senior Lisa Hunter (St. Louis, Mo.) led the team with 14 kills as Denver fell to 0-2 on the year. Bowling Green improves to 2-1 with the win.
"We started out fast, which is how we wanted to, but we did not finish" said head coach Beth Kuwata. "We did have a better set distribution, but we were outplayed defensively which was the difference in the match."
Junior Kim Muller (Ballwin, Mo.) added nine kills for DU, while sophomores Kerry Potter (Western Springs, Ill.) and Holly Benson (Colorado Springs, Co.) notched six apiece.
The Pioneers were up 18-9 in the first game, but the Falcons stormed back to win 32-30. DU led 26-21 late in the second game, but Bowling Green rallied for a second consecutive two point win. In game three of the match, the Falcons took control early and cruised to a 30-18 win.
In earlier action Friday evening Northern Arizona defeated UC Riverside in five games, 35-33, 27-30, 22-30, 30-21 and 15-12.
Denver takes on Northern Arizona at 1 p.m. and UC Riverside at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow to complete the Denver Invitational.
