DU Volleyball drops match to Arkansas State

Jonesboro, Ark. - The University of Denver volleyball team fell to Arkansas State in a Sun Belt Conference match-up, 3-2, Sunday afternoon in Jonesboro, Ark., 30-27, 25-30, 27-30, 30-24 and 14-16. DU fell to 8-5 overall and 1-1 in the SBC, while ASU improved to 9-7 and 2-0.

The Pioneers recorded a .419 attack percentage in the first game for the 30-27 win, but hit just .288 combined in games two and three, both losses. DU out-attacked the Indians in game four, .306 to .261 to force game five, but ASU outlasted DU for the 16-14 win.

Senior Lisa Hunter (St. Louis, Mo.) led DU with 20 kills, while three other Pioneers were in double-digit in kills. Sophomore Clare Maxwell (Western Springs, Ill.) posted a match-high 62 assists and sophomore Holly Benson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) had a match-high 23 digs.

"We came out ready to play in the first game," said head coach Beth Kuwata. "We had a hard time adjusting to their aggressive serving. I was happy with how we competed, but this could be one that we want back in the end."

DU returns to home to host Middle Tennesse in SBC action Friday, September 29, at 7 p.m., in Hamiliton Gym.
