JONESBORO, Ark. - With the score tied 48-48, Arkansas State's Adrianne Davie converted on a three-point play with 0:29 remaining in the game to take the lead and send the University of Denver women's basketball team to a 53-48 loss in the Convocation Center on Monday evening.
Denver (9-7, 4-3 Sun Belt Conference) went ahead 48-46 on a three-pointer by junior Sara Benham (Muleshoe, Texas) with 1:41 remaining in the game before Davie hit a lay-up to tie the game at 1:19 left on the clock. ASU (13-5, 7-1 SBC) hit two free throws to push the lead to five with just two seconds remaining in the game.
"I thought we had a solid game plan that we executed for 39 minutes," head coach Pam Tanner said. "I think we did a solid job tonight. We played a good game but for one minute we did not. I told them I'm proud of them. We have been on the road for a week and are going home having won two of those games."
The Lady Indians came out of the locker room after halftime and went on a 10-2 run to take the lead on a three-pointer by Ali Carter. Trailing by six, junior Brooke Meyer (Denver, Colo) hit a three-pointer to cut the lead in half, the closest the Pioneers had been since 16:00 in the second half. Senior Tyesha Lowery (Arlington, Texas) hit a jumper to bring the Pioneers within one point but a foul by freshman Ashly Robinson (Bloomington, Minn.) at the other end sent Jazmine Taylor to the line, hitting one of two, putting ASU back up by two points. Sophomore Andie Mason (Gilbert, Ariz.) hit a three-pointer to give DU a one point lead but a jumper by Davie gave ASU back the lead with 5:58 remaining.
In the first half, Denver jumped out to a four point lead to start the game, including having an eight point lead at one point. Lowery led DU at half with eight points. The Pioneers went into the locker room up 23-20, despite shooting 25 percent from the floor for the half.
Lowery led Denver with 12 points, eight rebounds and five points. Meyer was the only other Pioneer in double-digits with 10.
DU looks to extend its five-game home court winning streak against Florida Atlantic (4-15, 0-7) on Thursday, Jan. 18 at 5 p.m. MT in Magness Arena, the early game in a doubleheader with the men's basketball team.
