LAKEWOOD, Colo. - The University of Denver suffered a 4-3 loss to No. 34 Minnesota in men's tennis action tonight at Meadow Creek Tennis and Fitness Club. The Pioneers, who fall to 1-1 on the season, were led by juniors Adam Holmstrom (Eskilstuna, Sweden) and Niklas Persson (Stockholm, Sweden). The duo captured a doubles win and won their respective singles matches. The win marked a successful return for former DU head coach and current Minnesota head coach Geoff Young, who guided the Pioneers for the past six seasons.
DU captured the doubles point with wins from Holmstrom and Persson at No. 1 and Timo Kienle (Ludwigsburg, Germany) and Kalle Rosen (Helsingborg, Sweden) at No. 3. However, Minnesota stormed back with four singles wins to claim the 4-3 win. No. 21 Holmstrom won 6-1, 6-2 over No. 58 Raoul Schwark at No. 1, while Persson won 6-7, 6-3, 7-6 over Mikey Kantar at No. 4.
"Our guys battled hard and gave everything they had tonight," DU head coach Danny Westerman. "We had a chance to win the match and that's all you can ask for. I was really proud of our team's effort tonight."
The Pioneers (1-1) return to action Feb. 3 at No. 44 Texas Tech.
