Pioneers Fall to Louisiana in Conference Play

Box Score

Jan. 3, 2007

LAFAYETTE, La. - Despite being tied at half, the Denver women's basketball team allowed Louisiana-Lafayette to reel off a 14-point run to start the second half as the Pioneers dropped their second Sun Belt Conference game, 72-52, in Lafayette, La., on Wednesday evening. DU falls to 6-6 overall and 1-2 in the SBC, while Louisiana improves to 11-5 and 3-2.

"It was a tale of two halves," head coach Pam Tanner. "I was really excited about our first half, we haven't been successful here in the past but I think we did some great things in the first half. Opening the second half without scoring for six and a half minutes proved fatal for us."

Junior Alisha Godette (Colorado Springs, Colo.) had 18 points, and senior Tyesha Lowery (Arlington, Texas) added 16 points, but led the team in rebounds with six. Lowery had her best three-point percentage of her career, hitting 4-of-4.

DU went on a 6:36 scoring drought to begin the second half, allowing the Ragin' Cajuns to get out to a 14-point lead, broken when Godette hit back-to-back free throws. DU was outscored 45-25 in the half.

DU hit unanswered back-to-back hoops to close out the first half, part of a 9-3 run, to go to the locker room tied 27-27. Lowery led DU with nine points at the half, while the Pioneers stayed even with the Ragin' Cajuns in the rebounding department, locked up at 15.

DU (6-6, 1-2) will host Louisiana-Monroe (11-4, 1-3) in Sun Belt Conference action at Hamilton Gymnasium on Saturday, Jan. 6 at 2:07 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the men's basketball team. Mitch Hyder and Mary Kay Mauro will have the action on AM1600 and www.denverpioneers.com.
