Pioneers Drop Ragin? Cajuns in Three

Box Score

LAFAYETTE, La. The University of Denver volleyball team won its fourth consecutive match, dropping Sun Belt Conference foe Louisiana-Lafayette, 3-0 (30-25, 30-15, 30-22) Friday night at Earl K. Long Gym. Middle blockers Kim Muller (Ballwin, Mo.) and Kerry Porter (Western Springs, Ill.) led the way, each posting above .500 attack percentages.

“We got solid play from out middles tonight,” head coach Beth Kuwata said. “This road trip is difficult, but any time you can win two straight conference road matches is a good thing. We have one more match on this trip and if we can get that win it will be a successful trip.”

Muller led Denver (12-9, 6-2 SBC), recording a season-best .625 hitting percentage with 15 kills and no attacking errors. Porter hit .588 with 11 kills. Two other Pioneers, Alyta Baris (Belvidere, Ill.) and Clare Maxwell (Western Springs, Ill.) posted above .500 matches, with .529 and .556 respectively, committing no errors and combining for 14 kills. Maxwell had a match-high 45 assists.

Denver trailed Louisiana-Lafayette (3-21, 2-7 SBC) only at 1-0 in the first game, winning 30-20. Muller had eight kills in the game, part of DU’s 18. Denver hit .255 in the game while ULL had eight attack errors and 10 kills.

DU trailed 4-2 to begin game two but the Pioneers ripped off a 8-1 run to take the 10-5 advantage on a kill by Porter. Denver kept the pressure on the Ragin’ Cajuns, doubling up ULL to win the frame, 30-15. Senior Alyssa Hampton (Parkville, Mo.) led the way for Denver, hitting .833 with five kills and no errors. DU had only three attack errors in the frame.

The Pioneers looked to wrap up the match in game three but ULL would play tough, leading DU by as many as three. Denver knotted the game at 16-16 on a ULL error and never looked back, winning the final game, 30-22. The Pioneers forced Louisiana-Lafayette into 12 errors in the game.

Denver’s road trip continues at New Orleans on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 11 a.m.
