Box Score DENVER Freshman midfielder Ryan Aweida (Broomfield, Colo.) scored twice, including the golden goal in overtime as Denver beat San Jose State 2-1 on Monday afternoon.
The goals were the first two of Aweida’s career.
“I’m extremely proud of the way our team played today,” head coach Bobby Muuss said. “This was the second straight game where we were playing a man down in the second half. Hopefully, prevailing through that kind of adversity will create some momentum as we finish the season.”
With 28 minutes remaining in regulation, senior defender Jacob Chase (Golden, Colo.) was sent off after a second caution.
Denver (6-4-3, 2-1-2 MPSF) got on the board first in the 78th minute when Aweida headed in a corner kick from junior midfielder Joe Mathot (Port Moody, B.C.).
The Spartans (8-6-0, 3-2-0 MPSF) fought back, outshooting DU 15-6 in the second half and finally tying the game with 16 seconds left when Ed Brand scored on a penalty kick after freshman defender Michael Perry (Overland Park, Kan.) was called for a handball in the box.
Aweida buried the game-winner 3:14 into overtime, heading a corner kick from Collin Audley (Fort Collins, Colo.) off the goalkeeper’s fingertips and into the top of the goal.
DU hits the road to play a pair of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation games next weekend. Denver takes on Sacramento State on Friday at 1 p.m. MT and San Jose State on Sunday at 2 p.m. MT.
