Denver Downs UNLV, 1-0

Box Score

DENVER A late goal by junior defender Colin Jones (Philadelphia, Pa.) broke a scoreless tie to give the University of Denver men’s soccer team a 1-0 win over UNLV Friday afternoon at Pioneer Field.

In addition to giving Denver (10-4-3, 6-1-2 MPSF) the season sweep over UNLV (6-6-2, 3-6-0 MPSF), the victory kept the Pioneers in control of their postseason fate. The MPSF title and an NCAA Tournament berth will be on the line when Denver takes on No. 24 New Mexico at home Sunday afternoon.

“We are extremely excited to have the opportunity to play for the MPSF championship against a very talented New Mexico team,” head coach Bobby Muuss said. “Today’s win was crucial, and the team is ready for a competitive match on Sunday.”

Denver out-shot UNLV 23 to three in the game but did not connect until the 81st minute when Jones nailed his second goal of the season off a ball from junior midfielder Luke Jackson (Aurora, Colo.).

Roland Swanson made eight saves for UNLV while senior goalkeeper Matt Bredehoft (Fort Collins, Colo.) recorded two along with gaining his fourth shutout of the season for the Pioneers.

When the Pioneers host New Mexico on Sunday, they will honor their six seniors in their final home game of the season: Bredehoft, midfielders Eric Vogel (Cherry Hills Village, Colo.), Greg Fiddick (Sidney, B.C.) and Colby Pearce (Parker, Colo.) along with defenders Jacob Chase (Golden, Colo.) and Josh Fallin (Midland, Texas).

Kick off is set for 1:00 p.m. at Pioneer Field, and the game will be webcast on Pioneer Vision at www.DenverPioneers.com.
