DU Beats San Jose State 2-1 in Overtime

Box Score

SAN JOSE, Calif. Sophomore forward Collin Audley (Fort Collins, Colo.) scored in overtime and assisted Denver’s other goal, helping the Pioneers defeat San Jose State 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.

“I’m really proud of the way our team played today,” head coach Bobby Muuss said. “San Jose State is a tough place to play, but our players executed well and earned a well-deserved win.”

DU (8-4-3, 4-1-2 MPSF) jumped to an early lead in the 20th minute, when a shot by Audley went off the goalkeeper Lewis Sweeney’s hands, and junior forward Kyle Christensen (Layton, Utah) buried the rebound.

Just a minute later, San Jose State (8-8-0, 3-4-0 MPSF) responded with a goal by Ismael Ibarra off a feed from Nick Cukar.

The teams battled through the final 69 minutes of regulation to force overtime, including a missed penalty kick by the Pioneers with 25 minutes left in the game.

Senior defender Jacob Chase (Golden, Colo.) fed Audley, who nailed a shot from outside the box to the right corner at the 94:39 mark.

“It was a great goal,” said Muuss of Audley’s second goal of the weekend. “We had two big road wins at Sacramento State and San Jose State this weekend. Now our focus turns to Air Force on Saturday.”

With UNLV’s win over New Mexico (9-4-1, 4-1-1 MPSF) yesterday, the Pioneers sit atop the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation standing.

The Pioneers play their final road game of the season at Air Force on Saturday at 1 p.m. before returning to Pioneer Field for the final home games of the season against UNLV on Nov. 16 and New Mexico on Nov. 18
