Box Score LINCOLN, Neb. Senior Sara Benham (Muleshoe, Texas) scored a team-high 13 points as the University of Denver women’s basketball team fell to Nebraska on Sunday afternoon, 73-38 in the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
Benham, who notched her 44th double-figure scoring game, led the Pioneers in points with 13 and one block.
“We didn’t shoot the ball well,” head coach Pam Tanner said. “We dwelled on some mistakes early and that led to us committing more mistakes. If we can correct those things we will be a good ball team.”
Denver (4-7) shot 23.6 percent (13-of-55) in the game. Defensively the Pioneers came up with 12 steals to Nebraska’s 10. The Pioneers committed a game-low 18 turnovers.
Senior Alisha Godette (Colorado Springs, Colo.) scored five of DU’s first seven points as the Pioneers and Huskers (10-3) were tied at 7-7. A jumper by senior Brooke Meyer (Denver, Colo.) put DU ahead 9-8 but Nebraska went on a 15-0 run and Denver found itself down 26-9. Benham broke DU’s scoring drought with a jumper at 10:22. Denver cut the Huskers’ lead to 12 on a jumper by Benham, but trailed Nebraska 40-22 at half.
Benham led DU with 10 points in the first half. Denver shot 28.1 percent (9-of-32) in the half to Nebraska’s 45.7 percent (16-of-35). DU was outrebounded 32-to-11 in the half.
In the second half Denver’s troubles continued. The Pioneers trailed by as many as 35 and shot just 17.4 percent (4-of-23) from the field.
Senior Jenna Cole (Lincoln, Neb.) recorded two rebounds and a steal in her return to her hometown.
Cory Montgomery led Nebraska with 17 points in the game.
The Pioneers return to Sun Belt Conference play on Wednesday, Jan. 2 against Louisiana at Monroe in Magness Arena at 5 p.m.
