DENVER - Despite having a four point lead at the half, the University of Denver women's basketball team shot 18.9 percent in the second half, to lose its home season finale to Louisiana-Lafayette, 67-55, in Sun Belt Conference action on Sunday afternoon in Hamilton Gymnasium.
Senior Tyesha Lowery (Arlington, Texas), junior Alisha Godette (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and sophomore Nnenna Akotaobi (Thornton, Colo.) led DU with 10 points apiece. Godette pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.
"We had a bad day offensively," head coach Pam Tanner said. "Usually, when we have one person that has an off day offensively, we have three or four other players that can pick up the slack. Today we couldn't get a solid offensive contribution from anyone."
ULL (21-7, 12-4 SBC) led by as many as 11 points midway through the second half, but Denver clawed its way back into the game, getting within four. The Pioneers rally fell short, however, as the Cajuns outscored DU 12-5 in the final 3:30 of the game.
Denver (17-10, 11-6 SBC) hit the first basket of the second half, extending its lead to six, but ULL went on a 11-0 run to regain the lead, while DU went scoreless for 7:02. Akotaobi ended DU's drought with a lay-up.
In the first half, the teams combined for three ties and seven lead changes. DU took the lead at 7:58 remaining in the half on a lay-up by senior Lauren Reini (Portland, Ore.). Denver was 6-of-13 (46.2 percent) from behind the arc and got out to an 11 point lead at one point in the half. The Ragin' Cajuns cut the Pioneers' lead to two with 00:18 left in the half before Lowery hit an off-balance jumper as time expired, giving DU a 35-31 lead at half.
Yolanda Jones led ULL with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
DU wraps up its regular season against Louisiana-Monroe in Monroe on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. MT/7 p.m. CT. The game can be heard on www.denverpioneers.com with Mitch Hyder calling the action.
