PROVO, Utah - The No. 60 University of Denver Pioneers dropped a 5-2 thriller to BYU in men's tennis action at Provo, Utah. The Pioneers won the doubles point, but the Cougars stormed back with five singles wins, including three, three-set wins to net the 5-2 win.
The No. 40 doubles tandem of Adam Holmstrom (Eskilstuna, Sweden) and Niklas Persson (Stockholm, Sweden) improved to 7-0 with an 8-5 win over James Ludlow and Dominik Kaufhold at No. 1. Nejc Smole (Ljubljana, Slovenia) and Ravjot Dhatt (Victoria, British Columbia) defeated Chip Hand and Jonathan Sanchez 9-8(2) at No. 2 to help DU to the doubles point.
Persson stayed unbeaten at 6-0 in singles with a gritty three-set win over Sanchez at No. 4. But the rest of the match belonged to the Cougars, who improved to 17-1 at home since the 2004 season.
Ludlow upset No. 20 Holmstrom in three sets at No. 1 singles, while Kaufhold edged Smole in three sets at No. 2. Hand (No. 3). Cassidy Mears (No. 5) and Cale Planck (No. 6) also posted singles wins for the Cougars.
DU returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 24 at Utah.
