GREELEY, Colo. - The University of Denver women's basketball team had four players score in double-figures as DU dropped Northern Colorado, 88-59, in non-conference action at the Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Nnenna Akotaobi (Thornton, Colo.) led Denver with a career-high 19 points. Junior Sara Benham (Muleshoe, Texas) added 17 points, while junior Alisha Godette (Colorado Springs, Colo.) posted 14. Senior Tyesha Lowery (Arlington, Texas) recorded 12 points. Akotaobi pulled down a team-high seven rebounds, while Lowery recorded three steals.
"I thought we were extremely focused for a non-conference game this late in the season," head coach Pam Tanner said. "Nnenna played her best overall game as a Pioneer to date. Benham, Godette and Lowery gave up significant contributions on both sides of the ball today."
Denver (13-9, 7-5 SBC) outscored Northern Colorado (5-18, 2-10 BSC) 36-to-23 in the half, pushing the margin of victory to 31, the second-largest margin this season. Akotaobi scored 13 points in the second half as Denver led by as many as 33 points in the game. Denver shot 58.1 percent for the game, a season-high.
Denver shot its best field goal percentage of a half this season, 58.1, in the first half, sending DU into the locker room, 46-28. Benham registered 15 points in the half, missing only a three-point attempt early in the game. The Pioneers defense held UNC to 37.9 percent from the field in the half.
Denver finished 3-0 against the Front Range opponents this season, beating Air Force, Colorado State and the Bears.
DU returns to Magness Arena on Thursday, Feb. 8 to face Sun Belt Conference opponent UALR at 5 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the men's team. The action will be heard live on AM 1600 in Denver and on www.denverpioneers.com with Mitch Hyder and Mary Kay Mauro calling the action.
