TAMPA, Fla. - Adam Holmstrom (Eskilstuna, Sweden) won his seventh consecutive singles match and teamed with Niklas Persson (Stockholm, Sweden) for a win at No. 1 doubles to lead the No. 50 Denver Pioneers to a 4-3 win over North Florida in men's tennis action Saturday at the USF Tennis Complex in Tampa. With the win, DU completes a three-match sweep over Florida opponents and improves its record to 10-4 overall. UNF falls to 10-7.
Holmstrom and Persson improved their doubles record to 12-2 with an 8-2 win over Leornardo Gomes and Xavier Ferrin. However, UNF claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively.
DU won four of six singles matches to claim the narrow 4-3 win. No. 19 Holmstrom beat Matias Sigal 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles and Nejc Smole (Ljubljana, Slovenia) edged Eduardo Pereira in three sets at No. 2 singles. Timo Kienle (Ludwigsburg, Germany) and Kalle Rosen (Helsingborg, Sweden) recorded big wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively, for the Pioneers.
DU recorded wins over Central Florida and South Florida earlier this week on its spring break trip to the Sunshine State.
The Pioneers return to action on Saturday, March 31 against Northern Colorado.
