DENTON, Texas - No. 53 South Alabama blanked No. 46 Denver, 4-0, in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Women's Tennis Championships today at Waranch Tennis Center in Denton, Texas. The Pioneers fall to 13-9 overall and will face Troy tomorrow in the consolation match. South Alabama improves to 16-9 and will face No. 29 Florida International in the championship match tomorrow.
The Jags were able to get the match's first point with strong doubles play. USA's Adrianna Solarova and Sylvanie Spangenberg defeated Annette Aksdal (Oslo, Norway) and Ute Schnoy (Altenstadt, Germany) 8-2. Michaela Babicova and Dijana Stanic then clinched the doubles point by defeating Marisa Mechem (Fredericksburg, Texas) and Lorinda Boothman (Naples, Fla.) 8-1 in No. 3 doubles.
Babicova then earned another point for USA, beating Schnoy 6-4, 6-2 in No. 2 singles. The Jags went up 3-0 when Spangenberg earned a three set No. 4 singles win against Kyla Iwinski (Marietta, Ga.) 6-2, 1-6, 6-4.
Stanic then finished the semifinal contest off by defeating Rachel Sackmaster (Alpharetta, Ga.) 6-4, 6-4 in No. 5 singles.
The Pioneers (13-9) play No. 72 Troy (13-8) in the consolation match tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. MT.
