Pioneers Place Second at SBC Men's Tennis Championships

DENTON, Texas - No. 73 Denver was ousted 4-0 by No. 27 South Alabama in the finals of the 2007 Sun Belt Conference Men's Tennis Championships today at Waranch Tennis Center in Denton, Texas. The Pioneers finish their season with a 13-7 record and post their best finish at the championships since joining the Sun Belt Conference in 1998. South Alabama improved to 21-4 and earned the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Championships.

DU's No. 46 doubles tandem of Adam Holmstrom (Eskilstuna, Sweden) and Niklas Persson (Stockholm, Sweden) took the No.1 doubles match with an 8-2 win over USA's pair of Robert Hodel and Marek Sramek. South Alabama won the point with wins at No. 3 and No. 2 doubles, respectively. Dias Doskarayev and Craig Dunne defeated Jake Goldberg (Denver, Colo.) and Matt Kranich (Denver, Colo.) 8-5 on the No. 3 court and Jack Baker and RJ Nagel defeated Kalle Rosen (Helsingborg, Sweden) and Nejc Smole (Ljubljana, Slovenia) 8-6 at the No. 2 position.

Baker put USA up 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 No. 2 win over Smole, while Nagel was defeated Rosen 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5. Dunne then clinched the championship for USA with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Goldberg.

South Alabama's Baker was named the Sun Belt Tournament MVP. He went 3-0 in both singles and doubles in the tournament.
