PROVIDENCE, R.I. -

Freshman Ilija Gajic (Burnaby, B.C.) recorded his second hat trick of the season as the University of Denver men's lacrosse team dropped Providence College, 10-7, Tuesday evening at the Friar Lacrosse Complex. Gajic also recorded an assist for four points in the game.

 

The Friars (0-8, 0-1 MAAC) jumped on the scoreboard first but the Pioneers (6-5, 1-0 GWLL), led by two of Gajic's goals, rattled off three unanswered to take a 3-1 lead after one quarter. Sophomore Brad Richardson (Langley, B.C.) notched two goals to begin the second quarter, as DU took a 5-1 lead. The Friars recorded three unanswered to end the first half but still trailed DU 5-4 at the break.

 

PC kicked off the third quarter by scoring first, before DU regained the lead on a goal with senior Ryan Zordani's (Littleton, Colo.) second goal of the game. The Friars quickly retied the game, evening the score 6-6 after three.

 

In the fourth quarter, sophomore Joey Murray (Denver) took the lead for DU but the Pioneers couldn't hold off Providence, as Michael Farley recorded his third goal of the night for the Friars to knot the game, 7-7. Junior Jon Paulson (Flemington, N.J.) broke the tie with 6:53 remaining, for the eventual game winner. Senior Brandon Barcus (Dublin, Ohio) and Gajic finished DU's 3-0 run to end the game.

 

"It was a really tough game," said head coach Jamie Munro. "They are a well coached team and played great defense. We had to play well to beat them."

 

Murray also recorded three assists in the game.

 

The Pioneers travel to Louisville, Ky., to face Great Western Lacrosse League opponent Bellarmine at 7 p.m. ET/5 p.m. MT on Friday, April 13.
