Pioneers Knock Off No. 22 Washington, 4-1

Box Score

SEATTLE, Wash. sophomore forward Kellan Christensen (Layton, Utah) had a goal and two assists, as the University of Denver men’s soccer team knocked off No. 22 Washington 4-1 at the Husky Fever Classic on Friday night.

“I’m extremely proud about how the guys hung in there against a very talented Washington team,” head coach Bobby Muuss said. “When it was 2-1, the guys came back out after halftime and sealed it with two goals early in the second half. The way the team played tonight provides a giant step as a program.”

Junior midfielder Joe Mathot (Port Moody, B.C.) got things going for the Pioneers 10 minutes into the game, volleying in a pass from Christensen from 25 yards out.

Denver added another score seven minutes later, when Christensen scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season off an assist from sophomore midfielder Collin Audley (Fort Collins, Colo.).

Washington (4-2-1) brought it back to within one, when George John sent one over the heads of senior goalkeeper Matt Bredehoft (Fort Collins, Colo.) at the 25-minute mark.

Just 7:32 into the second half, junior defenseman Colin Jones (Philadelphia, Pa.) extended DU’s lead, heading in a pass from Mathot off a free kick.

The Pioneers iced the game at the 63-minute mark, when Christensen dribbled behind the box and fired a pass to senior midfielder Colby Pearce (Parker, Colo.) who one-timed a shot from the left side of the box to the far post.

The win marked the second straight road win for the Pioneers, while snapping a three-game winning streak by the Huskies, including a 1-0 victory on Tuesday over Portland, DU’s next opponent.

The Pioneers next continue the Husky Fever Classic when they face Portland on Sunday at noon.
