Box Score DENVER The University of Denver volleyball team swept its fourth consecutive opponent, this time downing Sun Belt Conference rival UALR 3-0 (30-17, 30-12, 30-20) on Sunday afternoon.
“The big thing today was for us to control the tempo of the match,” head coach Beth Kuwata said. “We wanted to involve our middles today and I think we did a good job of that. I’m most proud of our effort this weekend and our ability to stay focused. Not just from point to point, but game to game and match to match.”
Denver (8-7, 2-0 SBC) allowed UALR (9-5, 1-1 SBC) to score just 49 points on the day. The Pioneers held the Trojans to .027 hitting percentage on the match. Denver led in all categories including recording 57 kills, 51 assists, 55 digs and 10 blocks.
Senior Kim Muller (Ballwin, Mo.) led all players with 14 kills, a .520 hitting percentage and seven blocks. Senior Alyssa Hampton (Parkville, Mo.) had 13 kills.
In the first game the Pioneers pulled ahead on an attack error by Anita Bucur and never looked back, winning 30-17. Hampton recorded six kills in that game, while the team recorded 17 kills combined.
The second game was more of the same as Denver would not let the Trojans closer then four points at 8-4. DU had its best hitting percentage game of the match, .472, and won 30-12. The Pioneers forced UALR into 11 errors in the game.
UALR played Denver close in the third game, keeping the Pioneers lead to single digits until Muller put DU up by double figures at 23-13. Denver went on to win the frame, 30-20. Muller had six kills in the game, hitting .545. The Pioneers had six blocks in the game.
The Pioneers start their SBC road play next weekend beginning with Middle Tennessee on Friday, Sept. 28 at 6 p.m. MT.
