ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The No. 65 University of Denver men's tennis team lost the doubles point, but rallied to win four singles matches to post a 4-3 win over No. 49 New Mexico late Friday night. DU improves to 6-1 while New Mexico falls to 2-4.
New Mexico took the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and 3. No. 6 Adam Holmstrom (Eskilstuna, Sweden) and Niklas Persson (Stockholm, Sweden) remained unbeaten at 3-0 with an 8-3 win over No. 48 Max Jones and Kamil Pajkowski at No. 1. The loss was the first of the year for the New Mexico tandem.
Persson won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles, but the Lobos gained a 3-1 match lead with wins at No. 5 and 6 singles. The Pioneers rallied when Holmstrom won in three sets and No. 1 and David Simson (Vienna, Austria) won in three sets at No. 3. The Pioneers clinched the win with Benny Althaus' (Saarbrucken, Germany) win in three sets at No. 4.
"The guys really stepped up their intensity after the doubles point," DU head coach Danny Westerman said. "We are really proud of the way we competed tonight and look forward to Saturday's match against Northern Arizona."
Denver plays Northerin Arizona at 10 a.m. in Albuquerque.
