Pioneers End Regular Season with Loss to ULL

Box Score

LAFAYETTE, La. The University of Denver women’s basketball team fell to Louisiana-Lafayette 66-44 to conclude its regular season on Saturday afternoon in the Cajundome.

“We struggled to find the basket offensively today,” head coach Pam Tanner said. “On the road you have to score the easy baskets and we missed a ton of layups today that put us in a jam we couldn’t get out of.”

Senior Alisha Godette (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led the way for DU with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Senior Brooke Meyer (Denver, Colo.) and junior Celena Otero (Aurora, Colo.) recorded a three-pointer apiece, but a 19-6 run by the Ragin’ Cajuns to start the second half put the Pioneers in an 18-point hole. The Pioneers would pull within 14 but would not recover.

Trailing 8-7 to begin the first half, Otero drained a three-pointer from the corner to give Denver a 10-8 lead. ULL (8-21, 4-14 SBC) went on a 7-0 run to take a five point lead.

The Pioneers (11-18, 6-12 SBC) pulled to within one at 17-16 after Meyer converted on the layup and foul situation. ULL led by as many as seven points late in the half but Godette hit two free throws to pull the Pioneers to within five at the end of the opening half, 27-22.

Denver shot 31.4 percent from the field and committed 16 turnovers. Otero and senior Sara Benham (Muleshoe, Texas) had nine points apiece.

The Pioneers will travel for the first round of the Sun Belt Conference tournament, facing either North Texas or Florida International on Wednesday, March 5.
