Pioneers Fall to Retrievers

BALTIMORE, Md. The No. 16 University of Denver men’s lacrosse team fell to UMBC, 9-6, on Saturday afternoon at UMBC Stadium.

 

Denver (1-2) fell behind 4-0 before sophomore Charley Dickenson (Dallas, Texas) fed junior Brad Richardson (Langley, B.C.) at 2:13 remaining in the first quarter to put DU on the board.

 

The Pioneers cut the Retrievers’ (1-2) lead in half when junior Joey Murray (Denver, Colo.) found senior Jon Paulson (Flemington, N.J.) for a goal.

 

UMBC rattled off four unanswered goals before Murray and junior Cliff Smith (Surrey, B.C.) scored unassisted goals to start the fourth quarter.

 

After another UMBC goal pulled the Retrievers out to a 9-4 lead, freshmen Jamie Lincoln (St. Cathariens, Ontario) and Emerson Eichler (New Vernon, N.J.) netted goals late in the fourth quarter to pull within three of UMBC.

 

Dickenson had two assists for DU and Murray added one goal and one assist.

 

UMBC’s goalie Jeremy Blevins had 20 saves in the contest, while Terry Kimener recorded one goal and four assists for the Retrievers.

 

The Pioneers won at the face-off “x”, 13-to-6, as well as recording more shots in the game, 39-to-25.

 

The Pioneers continues road play against No. 18 Towson on Sunday, March 2 at 11 a.m. MT.
