Pioneers Edged by Tigers

TOWSON, Md. The No. 16 University of Denver men’s lacrosse team could not hold off No. 20 Towson, falling 10-9, on Sunday afternoon at Unitas Stadium.

 

Denver (1-3) jumped out a 3-0 lead after junior Joey Murray (Denver, Colo.) and senior Brett Koll (Fort Collins, Colo.) recorded goals in the opening stanza and junior Cliff Smith (Surrey, B.C.) added his seventh goal of the season at 11:20 in the second quarter.

 

Towson (1-1) rattled off three unanswered goals to tie the game at 3-3, but freshman Jamie Lincoln (St. Cathariens, Ontario) scored with 1:49 left in the half, giving the Pioneers the 4-3 lead at half.

 

The Tigers ripped off four consecutive goals to a take a 7-4 lead with 5:04 left in the third quarter. With 1:20 left in the third quarter sophomore Charley Dickenson (Dallas, Texas) found sophomore John Dickenson (Dallas, Texas) for a goal, putting DU within two of the Tigers.

 

Towson scored the first goal of the fourth quarter but senior Jon Paulson (Flemington, N.J.) recorded consecutive goals for the Pioneers to pull Denver within one goal, 8-7, with 7:33 remaining in the game.

 

The Tigers took a 9-7 lead but Paulson’s third goal of the game once again brought Denver within one at 9-8.

 

With 29 seconds remaining in the contest Lincoln recorded his second goal of the game, ninth of the season, to tie the game at 9-9. Towson’s Mitchell Rosenweig scored with 18 seconds left in the game, for the game-winning goal.

 

The Pioneers were unable to get a shot off as time expired.

 

The Pioneers return home to host the Face-off Classic this weekend. DU will face Brown on Saturday, March 8 at 1:30 p.m., and wrap-up the weekend against Penn on Sunday, March 9 at 1:30 p.m. Air Force will play the 11 a.m. game on both days.
