SACREMENTO, Calif. The No. 21 Denver Pioneers regained momentum after their first loss of the season this week to defeat No. 42 Sacramento State 6-1 on the road. With the win, DU rises to 15-1 while the Hornets drop to 11-3.
Denver would pick up only one doubles victory against the Hornets, losing the doubles point for the third straight match. Julia Bauregger (Klugenfurt, Austria) and Mallory Voelker (Dousman, Wis.) were the only pair able to take a match away from Sacramento State, blanking Melissa Valenzuela and Joyce Martinez 8-1 at No. 1.
The Hornets would not score another point the rest of the match as Denver swept singles play. Undefeated No. 77 Voelker downed Valenzuela 6-0 at No. 1 in a match that was retired after the first set and Kyla Iwinski (Marietta, Ga.) defeated Aileen Tsan 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5. Bauregger continued the momentum, picking up her 15th singles win of the season over Karina Jarlkaganova 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 and freshman Bhavani Tirumurti (Jakarta, Indonesia) clinched the Pioneer win with her defeat of Martinez 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6. Ute Schnoy (Altenstadt, Germany) and Annette Aksdal (Oslo, Norway) added to Denver’s lead with singles wins to end Denver’s 15th win of the season.
"It was important to bounce back after a tough loss to St. Mary's," said Schnoy. "We are ready for Fresno State. Vamos Pios!"
Voelker leads the Pioneers with a perfect 16-0 singles record.
Denver will face its highest ranked opponent tomorrow afternoon. The Pioneers will square off against No. 15 Fresno State on the road Friday, March 21 at 6:00 p.m.
