ORLANDO, Fla. Senior Adam Holmstrom (Eskilstuna, Sweden) remains undefeated in singles at 13-0 as No. 44 Denver defeated Central Florida 5-2 on the road today.
DU dropped the first doubles match of the day when Benny Althaus (Saarbrucken, Germany) and Niklas Persson (Stockholm, Sweden) fell to Tarek Ben Soltane and Blaze Schwartz 8-5 at No. 3. Andrew Landwerlen (Las Cruces, N.M.) and David Simson (Vienna, Austria) tied the doubles competition at one each with their 8-4 defeat over Claudio Romano and Sinan Sudas at No. 1. Holmstrom and Kalle Rosen (Helsingborg, Sweden) edged Johan Beigart and Brock Sakey 8-6 at No. 2 to clinch the double point for the Pioneers.
Denver picked up four of six wins in singles play to finalize the score at 5-2. No. 12 Holmstrom blanked Beigart 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 and Simson defeated Sudas 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2. Althaus clinched the win for the crimson and gold with his 6-2, 6-3 over Soltane at No. 4 and Rosen defeated Schwartz in a tie-breaker 6-1, 7-6 (8-3) at No. 6.
"It was very nice to wrap up spring break with a win today,” head coach Danny Westerman said. “We got a lot of work in this week and were fortunate to come away with a couple of wins. We should feel very confident as we shift outdoors."
With the win, the Pioneers move to 12-3 on the season. The Knights fall to 8-7.
Denver will travel to Idaho to take on Brown on Saturday, March 29 at 1:30 p.m. MST.
