Virginia Commonwealth Downs Denver 5-2

NORFOLK, Va Senior Adam Holmstrom (Eskilstuna, Sweden) remains undefeated in singles as the No. 45 Pioneers fell to No. 26 Virginia Commonwealth 4-2 on the road today.

With the win, Virginia Commonwealth improves to 16-7 on the season. Denver falls to 15-5.

Denver started off the match ahead by winning the doubles point. Benny Althaus (Saarbrucken, Germany) and Kalle Rosen (Helsingborg, Sweden) defeated Damien Lacombe and Stepan Siska 8-3 at No. 3 for Denver’s first win of the day. Andrew Landwerlen (Las Cruces, N.M.) and David Simson (Vienna, Austria) clinched the doubles point for the Pioneers with an 8-6 victory over Thibaut Charron and Bobo Delemark at No. 3.

Holmstrom was the only Pioneer to pick up a victory in singles play as the Rams cruised through the remainder of the match. No. 13 Holmstrom defeated Martin Schulhauser 1-2 in the retired match.

"VCU outcompeted us once singles got started," head coach Danny Westerman said. "This is the first time that has happened all year, which is disappointing especially against such a good team. It says a lot about why they have been in the Top 25.  We need to learn from today to bounce back against Old Dominion."

The Pioneers return to action tomorrow morning against Old Dominion. The match is scheduled for 8 a.m. in Norfolk, Va.
