Pioneers Win Sun Belt Shootout

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Senior Kalle Rosen (Helsingborg, Sweden) won a three-set match at No. 6 singles to give No. 42 Denver a 4-2 win over South Alabama for its first Sun Belt Shootout title this afternoon at Buck Boldin Tennis Center.

Denver won the doubles point and three singles matches to claim the narrow win. DU improves to 15-4 with it second consecutive win, while South Alabama falls to 10-8.

"The match could've gone either way, it was that close," DU head coach Danny Westerman said. "It came down to the last two singles matches and Kalle came back for a nice three-set win to give us the championship."

DU won two of three doubles matches for the early 1-0 lead. Rosen and Benny Althaus (Saarbrucken, Germany) won 8-2 at No. 3 and Adam Holmstrom (Eskilstuna, Sweden) and Niklas Persson (Stockholm, Sweden) clinched the point with a tough 9-7 win over Jack Baker and R.J. Nagel at No. 1.

Althaus won by retirement at No. 4 singles and Andrew Landwerlen (Las Cruces, N.M.) gave DU a 3-0 lead with a nice 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles.

South Alabama cut the deficit to 3-2 before Rosen's 6-7(3), 6-1, 6-1 match-clinching win.

No. 13 Holmstrom and No. 28 Baker's match at No. 1 singles was unfinished.

The Pioneers play Virginia Commonwealth on Saturday, April 12.
