Holmstrom and Persson Lose Heartbreaker

TULSA, Okla. - The season came to heartbreaking end for University of Denver tandem Adam Holmstrom (Eskilstuna, Sweden) and Niklas Persson (Stockholm, Sweden).

The No. 12 nationally-ranked duo was ousted by No. 6 Taylor Fogleman and Chris Kearney of North Carolina 7-6(10), 2-6, 6-3 in the round of 32 at the NCAA Doubles Championships at Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Thursday.

"There was some great tennis played today," DU head coach Danny Westerman said. "Unfortunately, Adam and Nik were on the wrong end."

DU's most successful doubles tandem ends its season with an 18-4 doubles mark. The all-time winningest DU tandem advanced to the semifinals of the ITA National Indoor Championships earlier this season and claimed three All-Sun Belt Conference doubles honors during their stellar careers. In addition, their leadership helped place Denver tennis on the national scene.

"Adam and Nik have done so much for this program and they will forever be missed," Westerman continued. "They helped put DU on the national map and Jeremy and I really appreciate their efforts. All incoming players will know that they have some huge shoes to fill and now some tradition to continue."
