Late Goal Lifts Wisconsin Past Denver, 2-1

DAYTON, Ohio The University of Denver men’s soccer team fell to Wisconsin 2-1 on Sunday morning in Dayton, Ohio, at the Dayton Flyer Invitational.

 

Wisconsin (2-0-0) got on the board first with a header goal by Austin Spohn in the 42nd minute of the first half. The Pioneers outshot the Badgers eight to six in the opening stanza.

 

Denver (0-2-0) responded to make it 1-1 just three minutes into the second half. Senior defender Colin Jones (Philadelphia, Pa.) netted his first goal of the season off an assist from freshman midfielder Jarod Stigall (Plano, Texas).

 

With 11:06 remaining, the Badgers regained the one-goal lead. Brian Bultman netted the game-winner for Wisconsin when he flicked a Pablo Delgado cross toward the far post past sophomore goalkeeper Teale Stone (Tulsa, Okla.).

 

Stone tallied five saves for the Pioneers, while Alex Horwath made six for the Badgers.

 

Denver outshot Wisconsin 15 to 14 in the match. Freshman forward Sam Garza (Highland Village, Texas) took six shots and placed four on goal.

 

The Dayton Flyer Invitational concluded Sunday afternoon when Dayton (2-0-0) defeated Wright State (0-2-0) 1-0. Jones and sophomore defender Michael Perry (Overland Park, Kan.) were named to the All-Tournament team. Dayton's Zach Weiss was named the tournament MVP. 

Denver’s home opener is slated for Friday, Sept. 5 against Loyola-Chicago at 4 p.m. The Pioneers are 2-0-1 all-time against the Ramblers.
