Box Score USAF ACADEMY, Colo. The No.22 University of Denver women’s soccer team fell to Colorado College 2-1 in double overtime in game two of the Falcon Invitational at the Cadet Soccer Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Colorado College (5-0-1) remained unbeaten with a goal by Kelly LaVoie 2:07 into the second overtime to break a 1-1 tie. The Tigers handed Denver (4-1-1) its first loss of the season.
Senior midfielder Taryn Hemmings (Greeley, Colo.) put DU on the board first with 13:39 remaining in the first half. After Tigers’ keeper Geneva Sills stopped a pair of shots by Hemmings and sophomore forward Lauren Cavarra (Littleton, Colo.), freshman midfielder Kari Storslett (Bakersfield, Calif.) tapped the rebound to Hemmings, who blasted it past Sills from five yards out to give Denver the 1-0 lead.
The Pioneers went into halftime holding the 1-0 lead. DU outshot CC six to two through the first 45 minutes.
However, Colorado College picked up its offense in the opening 10 minutes of the second half. A pair of shots by Tiffany Brown and Emily Beans went wide before junior goalkeeper Mackenzie Snyder (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) stopped a header by Brown.
The Tigers kept the pressure on, and DU’s defense blocked a shot by LaVoie. Beans struck another shot wide of the net before Brown snatched up a loose ball in the box and drilled it past Snyder from 10 yards out, tying the game at 1-1 with 25:42 to play.
Cavarra had a chance to put the Pioneers ahead in the 78th minute with a header, but the ball sailed just wide of the net.
The end of regulation saw the teams locked in a 1-1 tie. DU still held an edge in shots at 10 to nine.
Junior forward Mariah Johnston (Littleton, Colo.) ripped a shot wide in the 91st minute before a shot by Storslett also missed the net. Johnston looked to score the game-winner with a header four minutes later, but the ball again sailed wide. Snyder tallied two saves in the first overtime as the Tigers had scoring chances as well.
Finally, LaVoie tallied the game-winner for CC in the 102nd minute. The junior forward fired a shot across the field to the left corner from 15 feet out, giving the Tiger’s their fifth win of the season.
Snyder ended with five saves, while Sills had four for Colorado College.
Air Force (2-4-0) defeated Army (4-2-0) 3-1 in the Falcon Invitational tournament opener earlier Saturday afternoon.
The Falcon Invitational continues Sunday with the Pioneers facing host Air Force at Cadet Soccer Stadium at 1 p.m. MT. Denver takes on Fresno State and Gonzaga in Boulder, Colo. next weekend before opening Sun Belt Conference play at Louisiana Monroe and Louisiana-Lafayette the following weekend.
