Pioneers Fall 3-2 to No. 30 Ramblers

Box Score

DENVER The University of Denver men’s soccer team fell 3-2 to No. 30 Loyola University Chicago at Pioneer Field on Friday evening.

“I thought we played well during most of the game. It’s just unfortunate that we came out on the losing end,” head coach Bobby Muuss said. “We just have to keep looking forward, keep getting better and come out next week against San Diego State.”

Loyola (2-0-1) struck first when Scott Waggoner scored an unassisted goal halfway through the first half, and the Ramblers took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Denver (0-3-0) tied the score when senior defender Colin Jones (Philadelphia, Pa.) buried a pass from senior midfielder Joey Mathot (Port Moody, B.C.) with just under 28 minutes to play.

Keum Sung Kim put the Ramblers back in front with an unassisted goal from 15 yards out on the left side with 15:50 remaining in the game. Michael Ferguson extended the Loyola lead, nailing a penalty kick with 9:09.

Sophomore defender Ryan Aweida (Broomfield, Colo.) responded less than a minute later, scoring on a pass from Jones.

Denver returns to action at Pioneer Field on Friday, Sept. 12, when DU takes on San Diego State at 4 p.m.
