Box Score DENVER The University of Denver volleyball team (4-1) defeated the University of Iowa (2-3) in the second game of day two of the Pioneer Classic hosted by Denver at Hamilton Gymnasium.
All three sets were close between both teams as the Pioneers came out on top 25-22, 25-23 and 25-21 to capture their fourth win of the season.
“I think today we managed our game,” said Head Coach Beth Kuwata. “It wasn’t the kind of blocking effort that we had the night before, but I think we had different people rise to the occasion of playing. We don’t have one superstar. We have a bunch of kids that play team volleyball. Today was a team effort. Not everyone had their “A” game but we had some kids step-up and we got it done.”
Junior Emmy Davidsmeyer (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led Denver with 11 kills on 18 attacks, while teammate Kerry Porter (Sr., Western Springs, Ill.) finished with 10 kills on 16 attacks. Junior Clare Maxwell (Western Springs, Ill.) notched her third 30+ assist match of the season as she finished with 36 assists.
In the first match of the day, Virginia defeated the Tennessee Lady Volunteers 3-2 (25-23, 25-19, 19-25, 22-25, 15-6) to improve to 4-1 on the season and 1-1 in the Pioneer Classic.
After a rest and recover period, the teams will meet again at Hamilton Gymnasium at 5 p.m. as the Cavaliers will play their last match of the Classic against the Hawkeyes. The Pioneers will close out tournament play with a 7:30 p.m. match against the Lady Volunteers.
At the conclusion of the Classic, the MVP and all-tournament team selections will be announced and presented with awards, as so voted on by the tournament coaches.
Parent’s Weekend continues on during the Pioneer’s second match on Saturday as parents and family will be recognized throughout the match. At the conclusion of the final match against Tennessee, senior Jacqueline Paul (Albuquerque, N.M.) and sophomore Brittany Adams (Lakewood, Colo.) will be available for autographs.
