Box Score SAN JOSE, Calif. - The University of Denver men's soccer team was edged 1-0 by San Jose State in double overtime during both teams' Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener on Friday night.
The Pioneers (3-6-2, 0-1-0 MPSF) and Spartans (6-6-1, 1-0-0 MPSF) battled through a scoreless tie for the first 109:23 until Justin Castro scored on a direct free kick into the upper left corner for the game's only goal.
San Jose State out-shot the Pioneers 22-13 in the contest, in which goalkeepers Teale Stone (Tulsa, Okla.) and Joe Willis (St. Louis, Mo.) each had a pair of saves.
Denver remains in California for a matchup at Sacramento State on Sunday at 2 p.m. MT. The Pioneers return home next weekend for games against UNLV on Oct. 23 and New Mexico on Oct. 25.
