DU Volleyball Tops Troy 3-1 on the Road

Box Score

TROY, Ala. - The University of Denver volleyball team (10-13, 5-4 SBC) topped the Troy Trojans (11-12, 6-5 SBC) 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 18-25, 26-24) on the road in Trojan Arena as seniors Emmy Davidsmeyer (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Alexis Ninos (Cypress, Texas) led the Pioneers with 17 and 15 kills, respectively.

"I am really happy with the performance that we got from our seniors tonight, especially Alexis," said head coach Beth Kuwata. "She played with a lot of toughness and really showed what it takes to be a leader on the court. The team did a great job of battling back and not letting the match slip away."

Ninos' 15 kills tied her personal best for the third time in her Pioneer career as she also finished with 14 digs and two blocks.  Also finishing in double digits was sophomore Jordan Raines (Coppell, Texas) as she finished with 12 kills to go along with 15 digs for her sixth double-double of the season.

Leading the way at the net was freshman Faimie Kingsley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) as she finished with six of the Pioneers' 18 blocks to go along with four kills.

After taking the first two sets 25-19 and 25-21, the Pioneers hiccupped in the third set, dropping a 25-18 decision to the Trojans. Starting a little slow in the fourth set, the Pioneers allowed the Trojans to jump out to a 20-14 lead. But after a timeout called by coach Kuwata, the Pioneers went on an 11-4 run to tie the set a 24-24.

Unwilling to let the momentum slip, Denver closed out the set and sealed the match on back-to-back kills from Ninos to win 26-24 and take the 3-1 match win.

Meghan Gilroy led the way for the Trojans with 19 kills, while setter Megan Henderson finished with 37 helpers.

Denver remains on the road to face South Alabama on Saturday at 6 p.m. MT. The Pioneers then head to Denton, Texas to face North Texas in another SBC match-up on Monday, Oct. 26.
