Box Score MISSOULA, Mont. - The University of Denver women's basketball team (1-2) fell 65-51 on the road to the University of Montana (1-3) on Tuesday evening in Dahlberg Arena in Missoula, Montana, as junior Brianna Culberson (Jefferson City, Mo.) posted a career night with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Culberson's double-double effort marked the first time she has accomplished such a feat, as her 14 points matched a career best she set last season against Middle Tennessee (2/24/09) and her 10 rebounds broke her previous best of eight which she set against North Texas (3/1/09).
"We looked like a young team that was playing in their first road game," said head coach Erik Johnson. "It was a tough loss because we really played a solid game in the first 20 minutes. But, we allowed a really good Montana team, that wasn't shooting the ball particularly well in the first half, to get into a rhythm down the stretch, which took us out of our game."
To go along with Culberson's career night, sophomore Kaetlyn Murdoch (Temple, Texas) finished with 14 points making it her sixth straight game that she has finished with double-digits, dating back to the Pioneers game against North Texas (3/1/09). Murdoch also grabbed five boards and blocked two shots in 34 minutes of action.
Also turning in a strong performance for Denver was senior Ashly Robinson (Bloomington, Minn.) as she finished with eight points and seven rebounds in 28 minutes in the floor.
Denver shot 50.0 percent in the first half on 13-of-26 shooting, while Montana finished shooting 27.6 percent on 8-of 29 shooting from the floor. Prior to getting her second foul and being forced to sit for the final 2:16 of the first half, Murdoch led the Pioneers with eight points to go along with two rebounds, one block and one steal. Robinson also provided chances for the Pioneers as she finished the opening stanza with six points and five rebounds.
In the second half, the Pioneers struggled from the floor finishing just 8-of-26 for 30.8 percent, while the Grizzlies regrouped to shoot 52.0 percent on 13-of-25 shooting. After scoring only three points in the first half, Lauren Beck finished with 14 points in the second half on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor and an impressive 4-of-4 showing from downtown to lead her team with 17 points.
The Pioneers remain on the road as they travel to Fargo, N.D., to take on the North Dakota State Bison on Sunday, Nov. 29 at 1 p.m. Fans can catch all the action via Pioneer Vision as the "Voice of the Pioneers" Mitch Hyder will call all the action from the hardwood.
