CC Rallies for 4-4 Overtime Tie

Box Score

DENVER - Mike Testwuide scored three goals, including a penalty shot with 40 seconds remaining, to help No. 5/6 Colorado College to a 4-4 tie against No. 2 Denver in front of a sellout crowd of 6,046 at Magness Arena on Saturday night.

Denver (10-4-2, 8-2-2 WCHA) remains first in the WCHA with 18 points, while CC (10-4-2, 7-3-2 WCHA) is second with 16.

DU held a 4-3 lead with 40 seconds remaining in the game when Matt Donovan (Edmond, Okla.) intentionally dislodged the net. By rule, a penalty shot is awarded when the net is intentionally dislodged with less than one minute in the game. Testwuide went stick side and scored the equalizer to send the game to overtime.

"As disappointing as it is to not get the additional point, I thought our guys played pretty well tonight," DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. "We had them right where we wanted them, and I have to give CC credit for playing a tough game. We'll take the three points and get ready for Duluth next weekend."

Senior captain Rhett Rakhshani (Huntington Beach, Calif.) led DU with two goals and one assist.

Kyle Ostrow (Calgary, Alberta) put the Pioneers on the board first just 1:08 into the game. CC's Brian McMillin answered 1:13 later on an unassisted effort to tie the game. The teams exchanged two more goals to head into the first intermission tied at 2-2.

Rakhshani gave DU a 4-2 lead with two goals in a span of 2:25 in the second period. He netted a power-play goal at 12:52 before capitalizing on a shorthanded breakaway at 15:17.

"Rakhshani had a great individual effort," Gwozdecky said. "Tonight he showed why he will have a long professional career."

Marc Cheverie (Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia) made 28 saves, while Joe Howe tallied 32 saves for the Tigers. DU outshot CC 36-32 and held the visitors to 0-for-7 with the extra man, including killing off a 5-on-3 CC advantage for two minutes late in the third period. The Pioneers were 2-for-8 on the power play.

Next, the Pioneers hit the road for a two game series at Minnesota Duluth on Friday and Saturday. Puck drop for both contests is at 6:07p.m. MT.

Notes: Rakhshani ranks No. 48 on DU's all-time scoring list with 50-71=121. Patrick Wiercioch (Maple Ridge, British Colombia) left the game in the first period with an injury. He is questionable for next weekend.
